Presentation of the Journals of the Shackles of Memory
Since 1999 the association The Shackles of Memory edits and publishes a scientific journal in French entitled “The Journals of the Shackles of Memory”, regarding the slave trade, slavery and it’s contemporary consequences. These journals are published annually and distributed jointly by the Shackles of Memory (Nantes) and Karthala Editions (Paris).
Each volume comprises an average of 10 to 15 articles written by international researchers.

Since the beginning, The Shackles of Memory has strived for a forum of encounters, dialogues and debates between young and experienced international researchers (Europeans, Americans, Africans...). The association also hopes that the Journals offer, as much as is possible, a platform for young researchers by which their work can be supported.
The objectives of the journal are the following:
1) To allow historians to construct a universal and scientific history:
- via the recollection and dissemination of benchmark work regarding the Atlantic trade;
- via the encouragement of research encompassing other circuits of the slave trade, both on land and by sea;
- via the study of the construction and evolution of slave systems.
2) To contribute to the realization of the totality of heritages which the history of slavery and colonization has bestowed upon us:
- by questioning the models and institutions born from these confrontations,
- by taking stock of the past implicated in the construction of our cultural references,
- by exploring the traces of the collective traumas embedded in our psychic memory along with the dynamics involved in the construction of identities.
